Dasavatharam

The movie which will show the world what talent India has to offer. A person who will turn everyone’s attention to one country, one small piece of land, one language. The movie which will show that Bollywood can’t be taken as the face of the movie industry in India. The man who hasn’t got the recognition he deserves in spite of movies like Aalavndhaan, Hey Ram in recent times. Kamal Haasan, is the man of the moment, his hard work, commitment, dedication has already got him the producers for his next venture “Marmayogi”, which is rumored to be “Marudhanayagam”, the movie which needed colossal amount of money. Coming to Dasavatharam, the movie which will portray Kamal Haasan in ten different roles, out of which, only three roles can be identified as Kamal Haasan. Kamal Haasan’s movies are always ahead of the times and doesn’t get digested well with the audience, but with Dasavatharam, he will be making a point, “I do the thing I love most, in the best possible way, the way which satisfies me as an actor”.

Aalavandhan was brilliant for the screenplay, acting, story, direction, technical advancements, but it wasn’t well received by the audience. Anbe Sivam, Hey Ram also met a similar fate

Rajnikanth might be the super star, a mass puller and his last movie, Sivaji has “supposedly” made profits, the word supposedly because many distributors have lost lots of amount and apart from Tamil Nadu, it got Luke warm response in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Rajni may be the mass puller, the superstar but when it comes to versatile acting, its Kamal who is the Ulaga Maha Nayagan, the world’s greatest actor, I would simply say as the superstar to the superstars.

This year, it will be only Kamal all the way, he isn’t bothered about not winning an Oscar, we aren’t as well. I don’t consider Oscar Awards as a platform to recognize international talent or as a platform to display talent to the world. We have our own National Awards & the State awards which are enough to make us feel proud. But as Indians, we will not change, we realize, yearn to be appreciated by a third person, but as a Kamal fan, I do not aspire that Kamal gets an Oscar award to make a point that he is the greatest, but I would definitely be gladdened by the news that one man is able to turn heads to India, and this time its neither Aishwarya Rai nor Indian Masala.

The music has lived up to its expectations as I didn’t expect much from Himesh. A few songs were very good and a few were mediocre. You need to listen to it for a few times for the music to sink, but even after repeated listening, it left me a bit unsatisfied, ARR could have done much better. Final verdict can be given only after seeing the movie, the background score apart from the songs.

After the initial release of the trailers, I can say that Dasavatharam as a movie, will have something for even those who aren’t treated by ten Kamals.

    DASAVATHARAM - Points to Ponder

    READER WARNING :
THESE VIEWS MAY CREATE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS IN YOUR MIND ABOUT THE FILM.

    01. Kamal Hassan has done an amazing job with his 10 characters. However by concentrating a lot on these 10 characters, we think he got distracted and neglected many important things in the film.

    02. For the 14th century scene a lot of actors, properties and sets have been used. However in whole it does look grand. It doesn’t look like a proper colour grading is done to bring the out the best. Most of our viewers have seen films like Gladiator, Kind Aather, Hero, The Kingdom of Heaven, 300, Ashoka, Rang de Basanthi and many more. The grandness these films had in each frame is missing in Dhasavadharam’s 14th century scene. One reason could be because of the camera angels. Too many zoom ins and zoom outs. There is no colour equilibrium.

    03. The elegance which was in movies such a Minority Report, Pay Back, Resident Evil is missing Dhasavatharam’s biological lab. The lab looks like a secondary school lab and doesn’t inspire at all.
There is something wrong with the production design.

    04. Our viewers have seen a lot of car chases. They want to see something different. We can cater the same old stuff. Bourn sequel had some mind blowing car chases. Especially the Bourn Supremacy’s moscow car chase. The car chase what we had in Dhasawadharam is so kiddish. BTW were the cars right hand driven or left hand driven? We heard them saying they are in the US.

    05. The parcel submitted at MAS Kargo is delivered by FedEx. We need to double check if this is possible. It’s funny to see customer service executives shouting at customers in a western country. This will happen only in Tamil Films.

    06. Screen writer is influenced by ‘Sin City’. Villain resembles a character from that movie. At times villain jumps against Newton’s law. It make the movie more “Indian”

    07. They have put a lot of hard work with the make up. But the characters with mask look like puppets. The make-up looks so unreal. Normally this happens, however these issues will be adjusted in the post production while doing the colour grading. This is not done in Dhasawatharam.

    08. 3D and Composition look really bad in certain scenes. They don’t look photo realistic.

    09. The New York city bush scene looks clumsy. They have transfered a video footage to film where bush is coming in a limo. They could have recreated the whole scene. This is not for a university assignment. This is a film for real viewers.

    10. Looks like Ravi Varman - Cinematographer has become an addict to 3D computer games. Dhasavadharam has a lot of scenes that look like video games. Doesn’t look nice on a film of this nature.

    11. Overall production value is not very good. Our viewers have started noticing higher production value in films such as “Billa” “Aalavanthan” etc. Even 12 years ago itself “Thiruda Thiruda” had a very high production value.

    Bottom-line:

Kamal Hassan could have sacrificed his “Dhasa-Avatars” (Ten Avatars) and acted only in one character and assigned suitable actors for the rest of the 9 roles.
Could have made more civilized film with a higher production value by concentrating more on the technical side.

It’s a fact that Kamal Hassan has sincerely worked hard to make this film a success. Undoubtedly “Dhasavatharam” will become a box office hit. The screenplay has a good flow from the beginning to the end. Anyone will find this movie exciting. This doesn’t mean that the film is a perfect piece.

Every magazine that comes out of Tamil Nadu is blindly praising Kamal Hassan and over estimating the film “Dhasavatharam” . Many of them have stated that “Dhasavatharam” is like a Hollywood movie.

We wanted to express our unbiased views about “Dhasavatharam”.
This would have explained why “Dhasavatharam” can’t compete or can’t be compared with Hollywood movies. Hope the producers and the creators of “Dhasavatharam” will understand our views and take them positively.
